History

Peregrine Nesting Box located on the
Consolidated Grain Elevator, Savanna IL

During the morning hours on a sunny day the Video is not clear due to excessive dust and reflection of the sun.
Excessive dust is a constant problem due to being located on the elevator. |
History
Peregrine Falcon Box Camera was installed on 2/3/2012 on top of the Consolidated Grain Elevator in Savanna, IL.
Nest box was placed there in February, 2010.
The Peregrines moved in immediately in 2010 and setup home. 4 chicks fledged in 2010 and 5 chicks fledged in 2011.
2012
* Male Peregrine arrived back at the nesting box on February 20th.
* Both Pair have returned and are checking out the box on March 5th.
* 1st egg was laid on March 23
* 2nd egg was laid on March 25
* 3rd egg was laid on March 27
* 4th egg was laid on March 29
The first 3 eyases were hatched on May 4.

Life on Sloane Marsh

History
* March - Canada Geese, White-fronted geese, tundra swans, sandhill cranes are starting to arrive.
* November 30, 2011
- Sloane Marsh is starting to freeze and the waterfowl are heading out. There are still good numbers of divers in lower Spring Lake.
* November 17, 2011
- Hundreds of Canada Geese and a variety of ducks are stocking up for their trip south.

Bald Eagle Nest Located near Lock and Dam 13 on the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. (Near Fulton, IL)

2004 nest & eggs destroyed by high winds
2005 nest & eggs destroyed by high winds
2006 one mate killed after flying into power line, other mate
abandoned nest & eggs

2009 one chick fledged but flew into a power line and died
2010 three chicks fledged
2011 Nest was moved to new location, webcam installed. 2 x 4’s added to old nest for stability.
2011 eggs laid, parents abandoned nest, tree blew down in June.
2012 Pair returned to old nest site, 2 eggs were laid on February 1st and 4th.
They hatched March 14th and 15th. Parents (primarily Valor) did not seem interested and the chicks were left along for long periods of time. 1st eaglet roamed to far and went over the edge on March 17th. 2nd eaglet roamed too far on March 19 and got majorly stuck. Hope worked for hours to help the little one but to no avail. Eaglet fell from the nest around 6:00 p.m.

What's Happening
Eagles have headed north, camera is offline.
* Last two weeks in January there has been about 200 eagles. However, once the temperatures increased and the ice decreased the numbers have declined once again.

- Eagle Count - 60
*November 30, 2011
- Eagles are starting to show up at the Lock.
* November 13, 2011
- 350 - 400 Bald Eagles were spotted at Lansing, IA along with 2,000 tundra swans.
Fall will be soon coming to a close and the northern eagles will be making their way south. This is a great location to checkout the eagle numbers before you visit.
